Hiatal Hernia Repair

A hiatal hernia occurs when the upper part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm into the chest. This can cause symptoms such as heartburn, reflux, difficulty swallowing, or even shortness of breath. With over 1,000 successful repairs performed in the past 20 years, A/Prof Craig Taylor is a leading expert in this field. He uses the latest laparoscopic keyhole techniques to provide lasting symptom relief, overnight hospital stay, and faster recovery compared to traditional open surgery.
-
Gallbladder

The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ located beneath the liver, where it stores bile, a digestive fluid essential for breaking down fats in the diet. While the gallbladder stores bile, it does not produce it. The liver is responsible for bile production, which flows through the bile duct into the intestine to aid digestion. The gallbladder's function of storing bile was more important in ancient times, when humans had longer gaps between meals. In modern life, where we eat more frequently, this function is no longer necessary, and the gallbladder can be safely removed without impacting digestion.
-
Abdominal & Groin Hernia

Abdominal and groin hernias (including inguinal and femoral types) commonly develop due to a weakness in the abdominal wall combined with sudden increases in pressure, such as during lifting or straining. Because hernias do not heal on their own, surgical repair is required to prevent complications such as incarceration or strangulation. A/Prof Taylor performs all hernia repairs using advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques, providing patients with a rapid recovery, minimal discomfort, and a strong, long-lasting repair.
-
Treatment of Achalasia

Achalasia is a chronic disorder of the oesophagus in which the lower oesophageal sphincter fails to relax properly, causing difficulty in swallowing. Treatment is aimed at relieving the spasm and improving oesophageal emptying. Options include Botox injection into the sphincter, endoscopic balloon dilatation, or a surgical procedure known as Heller’s myotomy. A/Prof Taylor specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of achalasia, offering a comprehensive range of therapeutic options tailored to each patient.
-
Upper Endoscopy

An upper endoscopy, also known as a gastroscopy, is a procedure used to visually examine the upper gastrointestinal tract. It is performed as an outpatient procedure, using a thin, flexible camera that is gently passed through the mouth. During the examination, small tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken if needed. Upper Endoscopy is performed to investigate symptoms such as reflux, difficulty swallowing, abdominal discomfort, nausea, or suspected food intolerances, and to monitor conditions such as Barrett’s.
-
Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery

A/Prof Taylor also performs a wide range of upper gastrointestinal procedures, including surgery on the pancreas, liver, spleen, adrenal glands, and mesenteric vessels. All operations are conducted with precision, utilising minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques whenever appropriate to enhance early patient recovery.
