A/Prof Craig J Taylor

A/Prof Craig Taylor is a highly experienced Gastrointestinal, Bariatric and Metabolic Surgeon with more than 20 years’ experience helping patients achieve better health through modern, minimally invasive surgical care. His practice is centred on delivering safe, effective outcomes using advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques, even for the most complex procedures.
He is currently Head of Gastrointestinal Surgery at The Mater Hospital and a Senior Consultant in the Department of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgery at Concord Repatriation General Hospital in Sydney. He also holds the position of Clinical Associate Professor at University of Notre Dame Australia, reflecting his strong commitment to education and surgical training. He also performs regular outreach clinics to the communities in Lithgow and Tamworth in regional NSW.
After graduating with Honours from University of Sydney in 1997, A/Prof Taylor completed his General Surgery training with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2004. He then undertook a further three years of advanced subspecialty fellowship training in Upper Gastrointestinal and Bariatric Surgery in Queensland, France, and the United States. This extensive international training led to his recognition as an Upper Gastrointestinal Specialist and shaped the global perspective he brings to patient care.
Over the past two decades, A/Prof Taylor has performed more than 10,000 Upper Gastrointestinal and Metabolic surgical procedures, including a large volume of complex corrective and revisional surgery. His core focus is performing all procedures laparoscopically to minimise pain, reduce scarring, shorten hospital stays, and support a faster, safer return to normal daily life.
A/Prof Taylor plays an active role in training surgeons, doctors, nurses, and medical students. Many Australian and international surgeons have completed fellowship training under his supervision at Concord Hospital or participated in his Bariatric Masterclass Clinical Immersion programs at the Mater Hospital.
He is frequently invited to present at national and international surgical conferences and is the author of more than 25 peer-reviewed scientific publications. He remains actively involved in research focused on improving outcomes in Upper Gastrointestinal and metabolic surgery.
